(August 23, 2016) - The Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that the northwestbound travel lane on N Willamette Blvd will be reopened beginning on August 24 for the morning commute. This opening will end the detour currently in place on N Greeley Ave and N Lombard St. The detour has been in place since May 23 for the replacement of a viaduct supporting N Willamette Boulevard on the Willamette Bluffs.
People bicycling northwestbound will need to continue using the bicycle detour on the sidewalk. Road users in both directions will notice a new lane shift, delineated by plastic wands. The lane shift will be in place for an additional week or so to continue project work that does not require a complete lane closure.
(May 20, 2016) – The Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that replacement of a viaduct supporting N Willamette Boulevard on the Willamette Bluffs will require a lane closure and bus detour starting Monday, May 23 for three to four months.
The northwestbound lane of N Willamette Boulevard will be closed to motor vehicle traffic, all hours, all days. Northwestbound bike traffic will be detoured to the adjacent sidewalk, which will be shared with people walking.
The southeastbound lane of N Willamette Boulevard will remain open, though the lane will be shifted to the left in the work zone. The southeastbound bike lane will remain open, providing a 5-foot wide lane separated from people driving by plastic wands.
The replacement will bring the roadway up to current seismic safety codes and reduce the risk of landslides. The work will replace an outdated steel viaduct that supports part of the roadway. About 200 feet of structure will be replaced, and another 100 feet of guardrail will be replaced.
The $700,000 replacement is paid for with a portion of the City’s General Fund that is dedicated to Major Maintenance and Infrastructure Replacement Projects.
Northwestbound motor vehicle traffic, including bus traffic will be detoured around the area. Northwestbound motor vehicles will be detoured east on N Rosa Parks Way, to northbound on N Greeley Ave, to west on N Lombard St to south on N Portsmouth Ave back to N Willamette Blvd.
TriMet Line 44 bus stops will be closed from N Chautauqua Blvd to N Wabash Ave. Northwestbound buses will be detoured on N Wabash Ave to westbound N Lombard St, to southbound Chautauqua Blvd. For information on impacts to TriMet bus service, check trimet.org/alerts.
For more information, see the project web site. An open house was held earlier this week and notices were mailed to residents and businesses in the area.
The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by reader boards, and use alternate routes if possible.
This work is weather-dependent and the schedule may change.
