Right now, the technology that controls when gates come down across intersections with railroads dates back to the 1970s. This project would look at updating that technology, such as adding more wiring to confirm when a train is arriving or installing a backup battery in the case of a power outage. Trains going through these crossings may carry hazardous materials, so making sure these intersections are safe is very important. Updating this technology will also align with the City’s commitment to eliminating all traffic fatalities with Vision Zero. The project is expected to be finished in 2017.
