Portland is rightly proud of its green reputation. It was the first city in the United States to enact a comprehensive climate policy. Enjoying the natural environment is a beloved pastime for many Portlanders and the natural beauty both in and surrounding Portland is considered to be one of the city’s most prized amenities.
The city’s close bond with nature supports another Portland hallmark: the embrace by many Portlanders of an outdoors and active lifestyle. Portland is among the nation’s healthiest cities—ranked by American College of Sports Medicine in 2016 as the fourth fittest in the U.S.
Like the rest of the city, PBOT is dedicated to preserving the natural world and protecting public health. That is why, the bureau aims to build projects and put in place policies and programs that are sustainable and that support healthy communities and residents.
In our core functions and in the strategies of Portland Progress II, we are working to provide inviting and attractive, efficient alternatives to the single passenger car, increase the safety of people walking, biking and rolling and to support neighborhood collaboration and vitality.
