Smart City

The pace of technological change in the transportation sector can be dizzying. A decade ago, the idea of self-driving cars appeared to be something out of science fiction. Today, they are appearing on US streets with increasing frequency.

Portland has been a leader in developing and using cutting-edge technology to make its transportation system more efficient and accessible. This leadership was recognized last year when Portland was named one of only seven finalists in the US Department of Transportation Smart City Challenge. The challenge offered $50 million dollars to the mid-sized city that could develop the most compelling plan for using advanced transportation technology and data systems improve the lives of its residents by making transportation more reliable, more accessible and safer.

While Portland did not ultimately win the challenge, competing as a finalist has galvanized the city’s overall innovation efforts. There is now an enhanced level of commitment among the partners effort to realize the vision the city presented during the Smart City Challenge. 

The actions that are part of this strategic initiative will capitalize and accelerate the momentum Portland now has. We will continue moving data and services online for easier customer access, and advancing our business operating platform to better track inventory and labor. We must devote staff resources toward research, development, and policies around trends such as autonomous vehicles to ensure that PBOT can take a proactive approach toward emerging technologies. We will also harness data collection methods to create defensible plans, evaluate decisions, and measure outcomes.
