As the city filled in, there was an increased concern with design -- creating a metropolitan place. Mr. Ladd, at his death, was the wealthiest man in the Northwest and a merchant, industrialist, and experimental farmer. At one time he owned farms that became Laurelhurst, Ladd's Addition, Eastmoreland, and Portsmouth. He held his properties and let development occur around him.
