After World War II, the state began building the freeway system. They started with the radial elements to serve intercity travel rather than the loops for regional traffic. The Banfield was easily inserted in Sullivan's Gulch without upsetting the city's grid. But land use developments like Lloyd center mall, built to take advantage of the new freeway, did disrupt old patterns.
