1. Why does this project include on-street parking removal?
A number of City policies and policy documents call for increasing the number of people who walk, bicycle, and take transit in the city, specifically the Climate Action Plan, Portland Plan, and Transportation System Plan. In areas where private off-street parking is plentiful and demand for on-street parking is low, PBOT will reallocate City right of way for bike lanes and other transportation system enhancements.
2. Why doesn’t this project include parking protected or bollard protected bike lanes?
The high number of driveways and streets that connect to SW 45th constrains the design options. We can’t place protection at driveways or in the sightline space next to driveways.
3. Can this project include crosswalks or cross bikes at SW Illinois and SW 45th?
This intersection has a variety of design constraints and we are working on defining the available options. SW Illinois is not an easy intersection to mark crosswalks at because of the locations of the driveways, and additional on-street parking removal would be necessary.
