On May 19, 2017, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) informed the Portland Water Bureau that the treatment variance granted in 2012—which exempted the Water Bureau from having to treat its water for Cryptosporidium—was being revoked.
As such, on August 2, Portland City Council voted to instruct the Water Bureau to build a water filtration plant. Council further ordered the bureau to continue its commitment to protect the Bull Run Watershed, increase efforts to expand programming to support low-income households, and provide annual reports on the progress of this project annually.
This website provides information about background and next steps in the Water Bureau’s process for complying with the treatment requirements for Cryptosporidium.
