Mayor Ted Wheeler Selects Michael Cox as Next Chief of Staff
Cox will take on new role on July 7
Portland, OR – Mayor Ted Wheeler has selected Michael Cox as his next Chief of Staff. Cox will take over for Maurice Henderson on July 7, when Henderson leaves to become Chief Operating Officer of TriMet.
“Michael has been a strong and trusted advisor to me for years,” said Mayor Wheeler. “As my Chief of Staff, I expect him to foster positive relationships in the community, work productively with our colleagues on City Council, and leverage the tremendous talent we have on our team to move our policy agenda forward.”
Most recently Cox served as Mayor Wheeler’s Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Communications. Cox first started working for then-State Treasurer Wheeler in 2014 as his Communications Director.
Cox managed Wheeler’s successful campaign for Mayor in 2015 and 2016, focusing on Wheeler’s top priorities: ensuring housing in Portland is affordable and accessible, helping those experiencing homelessness find permanent housing, and leading a Police Bureau focused on the principles of 21st Century Policing.
Cox has more than a decade of experience working in government and campaigns on the West Coast, including communications roles with the Oregon House Democratic Caucus, SEIU California, and Cover Oregon.
