Mayor Wheeler Introduces Three Notable Items in City Council This Week

This week’s agenda includes a rental registration program and increased funding for homelessness and affordable housing initiatives.

Portland, OR—Three notable items are coming to City Council this week, as introduced by Mayor Wheeler’s Office. A brief description of each is below.

This ordinance will create a Rental Registration System, a real-time and reliable inventory of residential rental housing units within the city to help to provide essential support for existing and potential tenant protection policies of the City.

This ordinance will authorize a record $31.2 million in funds for the Joint Office of Homeless Services for the 2018-2019 budget, a 10.1 percent increase compared with last year.

This ordinance will authorize 11 subrecipient contracts totaling $4,190,763 for services in support of providing affordable housing. The ordinance is in line with Portland Housing Bureau’s Strategic Plan to prioritize the prevention of families from losing their homes, helping Portlanders from communities of color buy a home, and providing a safety net that includes shelters and other short term supports for low-income Portlanders who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. PHB will be entering into funding agreements with nine non-profit organizations whose contract amounts exceed $100,000.

The City of Portland will adopt the Safe Routes to School Primary Investment Routes and project list, including Fixing Our Streets-funded projects. Safe Routes to School initiative is a comprehensive equity-based program that integrates education, encouragement, engineering, evaluation, and enforcement to improve the safety of walking and biking conditions around schools.
