Kick Off “STEPtember” with First-Ever Mayoral Walk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kick Off “STEPtember” with First-Ever Mayoral Walk

Mayor Ted Wheeler joins Oregon Walks’ STEPtember with a community walk.

Portland, OR–Oregon Walks is eagerly gearing up for the fifth annual STEPtember event, which runs September 1st through September 30th.

This year, Oregon Walks, in partnership with Oregon Public Health Association, will be launching the series with a kick-off walk featuring Mayor Ted Wheeler. The walk is scheduled for Friday September 7, 1:00 pm-2:30 pm and will start outside the front entrance of Portland City Hall (1221 SW 4th Ave).

The walk is a slow-paced 1.4 mile route that is fairly flat and accessible to everyone who walks or rolls. It’s a perfect opportunity to go for an afternoon stroll. The walk will go from City Hall, across the Hawthorne Bridge, and then back to City Hall.

This kick-off walk is meant to promote the health benefits of walking and raise awareness of STEPtember, which provides opportunities for people living in the Portland metro area—and all over the state—to participate in a variety of walks focused on fun, health, education, and community building.

Last year, nearly 600 people joined Oregon Walks on 39 walks all over the state.  A wide variety of walks were led by individuals and organizations, including AARP Oregon, Friends of Trees, City Repair, and Portland Parks and Recreation.

This year, Oregon Walks is planning even more walks. And because walks can be put on by anyone in the community, STEPtember offers opportunities to engage with fellow community members, discover new neighborhoods, and learn about hidden gems.  Join us to find new places to walk and meet new people to walk with. Oregon Walks is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to promoting walking and making the conditions for walking safe, convenient, and attractive for everyone.
