Mayor Ted Wheeler’s Voting Statement on Portland’s Universal Representation Ordinance
Portland has prioritized these resources so undocumented members of our community can receive the representation that they deserve.
I want to be clear I know it’s not enough – And we have some serious battles coming up on the ballot in November, and I don’t want to understate that reality.
Now is not the time to stay silent – Now is not the time to have our voices silent on these issues
Hate and racism are unacceptable here and anywhere else for that matter.
And while I do not walk in the shoes of immigrants in this community and I cannot imagine the struggles that you are currently facing in this often hostile environment, but I want you to know this. Those of you in the immigrant community that I see you and I stand with you and the people of this city see you and they stand with you too.
That what this ordinance is about, it’s about making sure that people have access to their existing constitutional rights which are currently under attack and therefore there is a role for the rest of us in this community to play.
