Mayor Ted Wheeler Appoints Interim Director For The Mayor’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention

Mayor Ted Wheeler has appointed Tom Peavey as Interim Director of the Mayor’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention (OYVP). Peavey—most recently Policy Manager for the OYVP—steps in for Antoinette Edwards who retired after serving for ten years as director for the OYVP. The office works with the Mayor, the police and other city bureaus, the county, state and federal services, businesses, schools and the faith community to help reduce violence and to offer support for victims of violence.

Peavey has a long history of serving Portland communities. He was a member of the Portland Police Bureau for 31 years (1973-2004), serving as a 4-year member of the Mounted Patrol Unit as well as on Portland’s first Neighborhood Response Team pilot program. In 2006, he transitioned into the OYVP where he was awarded for his work by a local faith-based organization engaged in several community problem-solving and mentoring projects. He has also served as the secretary for the agency’s Community Peace Collaborative Public Forum since the forum’s creation in 2014.

On a personal note, Peavey, who lives with his wife of 36 years, is a father of two and grandfather of five. He’s been deeply involved in area youth sports as a coach and mentor since the 1990s. He will serve as Interim Director while the Mayor’s Office completes the process of finding a full-time replacement for Edwards.
