Appeal Information Sheet

Appeal item 1

Code Section

NEC 110.26E1

Requires

Indoor: Indoor installations shall comply with 110.26(E) (l)(a) through(E)(l)(d).
Dedicated Electrical Space. The space equal to the width and depth of the equipment and extending from the floor to a height of 1.8 in (6 ft) above the equipment or to the structural ceiling, whichever is lower, shall be dedicated to the electrical installation. No piping, ducts, leak protection apparatus, or other equipment foreign to the electrical installation shall be located in this zone.

Code Modification or Alternate Requested
Proposed Design

Install MCC below a crane rail that is 3'1O" above MCC.

Reason for alternative

This building is a historic Gatehouse for the Washington park reservoirs. Its sole purpose is to
house the pumps, valves and controls for the reservoir and new reflecting ponds.

There is limited space to install the MCC and the crane is necessary to maintain the equipment in the lower levels.

As designed there is plenty of room above the MCC to run any needed conduits to the ceiling or wall to accommodate any systems. Plus, many conduits will be going to the lower levels.

Appeal Decision

Reduction in dedicated electrical space at motor control center: Granted as proposed.

The Administrative Appeal Board finds that the information submitted by the appellant demonstrates that the approved modifications or alternate methods are consistent with the intent of the code; do not lessen health, safety, accessibility, life, fire safety or structural requirements; and that special conditions unique to this project make strict application of those code sections impractical.
