Appeal Information Sheet
Appeal item 1
| Code Section | 703.2 |
|---|---|
| Requires | Code Section 703.2 The fire resistance rating of building elements, components or assemblies shall be determined in accordance with the test procedures set for in ASTM E119 or UL 263 or in accordance with Section 703.3. Where materials, systems or devices that have not been tested as part of a fire- resistance-rated assembly are incorporated into the building element, component, or assembly, sufficient data shall be made available to the building official to show that the required fire-resistance rating is not reduced. Materials and methods of construction used to protect joints and penetrations in fire-resistance-rated building elements, components or assemblies shall not reduce the required fire- resistance rating. |
| Code Modification or Alternate Requested | The intent of the appeal is for the use of a UL tested column protection assembly on an untested beam assembly. |
| Proposed Design | The building code requires all primary and secondary structural members have a fire resistance rating. The Central Lofts project has a primary HSS beam structure that are being fire proofed with intumescent paint to achieve the required fire resistance rating. However, there are no UL tested beam assemblies available. According to Carboline, it is typical industry practice to apply UL tested column assemblies to untested beam assemblies, propose a conservative thickness and allow for the Authority having Jurisdiction to determine the application is approvable. The basis of design (with provided attached backup information) is to use AD/IMF 90-01 tested column assembly and apply it to the specified beam assembly with a minimum thickness of 35 mils providing a 1 hour fire protection rating. |
| Reason for alternative | Currently there are only UL approved designs for column applications, UL testing has not been made available on HSS beams. The common practice of fireproofing HSS beams, according to Carboline, is to use a column design. A column design assumes all 4 sides of the member are exposed to fire, whereas a beam design only has 3 sides exposed to a the fire, so applying a UL tested column assembly to a beam assembly will achieve and exceed the code required structural integrity of the beam in the event of a fire. |
