Appeal Information Sheet

Appeal item 1

Code Section

ASCE7-16,12.13.9

Requires

Per the submitted Geotechnical report, vertical settlements in the range of 8 to 10 inches and lateral spreading between 4 and 17 feet with some portions of the property susceptible to flow failure. The estimated ground displacements exceed what is allowed by ASCE 7-16 12.13.9 for new structures supported on shallow foundations.

Code Modification or Alternate Requested

We're seeking to appeal the code to allow for the installation of the paint booth and shallow exhaust pit. The proposed paint booth is a lightweight low occupancy, specialty-use structure with a relatively low consequence of failure compared to other portions of the structure or comparatively sized new structures. We believe the code doesn't apply to our proposed paint booth.

Proposed Design

Our proposed paint booth design is constructed with light weight insulated panels anchored to existing slab. The proposed pits function as underground exhaust ducts to force the air down and vented through the exhaust ducts. See the attached drawings for reference.

Reason for alternative

It is our understanding that the installation of the paint booth does not contribute to the detriment any life safety concerns.

Appeal Decision

Installation of a paint booth with a shallow pit that does not meet liquefication standards for foundations: Hold for more information.
