Appeal Information Sheet
Appeal item 1
| Code Section | 2022 Oregon Fire Code, Section 304.3.4, Capacity of 1 Cubic Yard or more. |
|---|---|
| Requires | Dumpsters with an individual capacity of 1.0 cubic yard or more shall not be stored in buildings or placed within 5 feet of combustible walls, openings or combustible roof eave lines unless the dumpsters are constructed of non-combustible materials or of combustible materials with a peak rate of heat release not exceeding 300 kW/m2 where tested in accordance with ASTM E1354 at an incident heat flux of 50 kW/m2 in the horizontal orientation. |
| Code Modification or Alternate Requested | Specifically, we are requesting an alternate to the following requirement be permitted: “… dumpsters are constructed of non-combustible materials or of combustible materials with a peak rate of heat release not exceeding 300 kW/m2 where tested in accordance with ASTM E1354 at an incident heat flux of 50 kW/m2 in the horizontal orientation.” In lieu of the dumpster construction requirement, we are proposing to add fire protection at the ceiling of the trash-recycle structure. |
| Proposed Design | We are proposing to add a layer of exterior 5/8” Type X gypsum board at the ceiling of the trash-recycle structure. This gypsum board will be attached at the underside of the 2 x wood roof rafters. This is our proposed alternate design to allow the non-rated dumpsters to be placed in the trash enclosure. |
| Reason for alternative | In our discussions with the local garbage disposal company, they are not aware of these specific requirements of the code for dumpster containers. More importantly, they do not provide a dumpster that meets this specific code requirement. Thus the reason for the proposed alternative. |
