Code Modification or Alternate Requested

With the addition of 45-minute rated operable windows with fusible links.

Proposed Design

"RECONSIDERATION TEXT"
5 operable window units have been located within the area required to be 1hr protected. To comply with the Natural Ventilation requirements of 2022 OSSC 1202.5.1, and to provide the basic function of an operable window at these residential units to increase occupant comfort; the proposal is to utilize fire-rated operable windows at (5) openings. The specified window system is a steel frame, awning window with a fusible link that closes the operable panel upon exposure to heat. The specified window system is UL-listed and tested per ASTM. The proposed fire rating for these (5) operable windows and glazing is 3/4 hour as required.

Reason for alternative

"RECONSIDERATION TEXT"
The proposed reconsideration utilizes fire-rated windows and glazing with steel frames at (5) locations, which benefit occupant comfort and enhance livability.

This method has been granted in many previous building code appeals in the City of Portland—see Appeal 16852 Item #1, 24506 Item #1, and 24740 #1 for examples. The use of fusible link window systems provides the required protection and is an equivalent level of protection and safety.
