Code Modification or Alternate Requested

Lloyd Center Mall seeks permission to remove the six beam detectors wiring from the transponders that are assessable and program them out of the fire detection system.

Proposed Design

The East Skylights, Center Court Skylights, and West Skylight frame system are fully sprinklered, including the peaks, inside the pedestrian bridges and below the pedestrian bridges.
All avenues leading from the Skylights area to the north, east, south, and west buildings are alarmed for smoke detection and sprinklers, including Tenant suites.
MaxSent, the mall’s onsite security, is onsite 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Security dispatch is also onsite watching live camera footage 24/7 as well as security offices doing interior and exterior building sweeps 24/7. The openness of the design allows for quick and easy identification of any problem.

Reason for alternative

Access is very difficult to near impossible. The five sets of beam detectors are 71’ above the Main floor. The one set of beam detectors are 61.5’ feet above the 3rd floor with near impossible access that is right above a set of escalators. An extremely large articulating man lift would be required to reach them and is not practical for use within the confines of the main floor area. The ability to reach the center and far west beam detector is not possible given the lower structural steel components that could not hold the weight of the articulating man lift.
Routine maintenance, even cleaning, is not possible due to the location of the beam detectors.
