Appeal Information Sheet

Appeal item 1

Code Section

1010.2 Door operations

Requires

Except as specifically permitted by this section , egress doors shall be readily openable from the egress side without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort.

Code Modification or Alternate Requested

To lock the egress door and add special operation and effort to open the door.

Proposed Design

(I do not have the original text available) "Reconsideration text"
We will use a mag lock to lock the door, Install a emergency door release pull station with a tamper cover and signage above that reads " For emergency door release use pull station below". This mag lock will be tied to the buildings Fire Alarm so that any general alarm will release the door so that it operates to its intended operation as a egress door. We will also have a access control card reader that will release the door for regular entry into the building for the residents.

Reason for alternative

The building is experiencing trespasser's entering the building through the garage gates behind automobiles and then entering the resident areas and stealing bicycles, packages and presenting a security risk to the resident that live in the building.

Appeal Decision

"Electromagnetic Lock at Egress Door from Parking Garage: Granted provided a pull station with signage is provided at the door and the electro-magnetic lock is tied into the fire alarm system such that activation of the fire alarm system or loss of power will unlock the door and provided signage to exits is also posted.
Note: Decision can be revoked at the discretion of the Fire Marshal where conditions of appeal are not met."

" ""The Administrative Appeal Board finds with the conditions noted, that the information submitted by the appellant demonstrates that the approved modifications or alternate methods are consistent with the intent of the code; do not lessen the health, safety, accessibility, life, fire safety or structural requirements; and that special conditions unique to this project make strict application of those code sections impractical.
