Requires

MAINTAIN ACCESS ROADS AND PER COMPANY REFERRAL FROM STATION 1,
MARKED FIRE LANES IN CENTER POST FOR NEW GATE GOING IN AT UNOBSTRUCTED MANNER

Code Modification or Alternate Requested

We are appealing the decision against allowing a collapsible center bollard for our security gate callbox.

Proposed Design

The fire Marshall has indicated that a permanent bollard would hinder fire engine access onto the south end of the property due to the tightness of the inbound right turn. We understand this requirement and propose a collapsible bollard system that would be lowered to allow the full width of the lane for fire access.

Our proposed design allows for a single collapsible bollard with a mounted callbox that could be quickly lowered into the ground and allow any large engine access to the south end without significantly impacting response times.
The single bollard would have a Knox Box mounted on it, in an easily accessible
location, to allow for the responding fire engine to lower the bollard and allow the large ladder truck to gain access.

Reason for alternative

A key piece to a well functioning vehicle gate system is the location of the callbox to allow access for vendors and guests. Our requirements centered around the day-to-day vehicle and pedestrian safety needs of the residents and surrounding community due to the nearly 400 vehicles that enter or exit the property every day.

  1. Try to avoid alterations in normal directional traffic flow
  2. Do not require drivers to exit their vehicles to access a callbox
  3. Minimize the vehicle time-to-enter from Naito parkway

We evaluated 4 options:

  1. Callbox on right of entrance
  2. Callbox on the gate
  3. Callbox on left of entrance
  4. Callbox on a center bollard

Options 1 and 2 were ruled out due to not meeting requirements (Option #1) or not possible due to engineering (Option #2).
Option 3 of having a callbox on the drivers left would require alterations in normal direction traffic flow and although it is a feasible option, it’s not the best since it would require either changing the entire traffic flow on the property or having vehicles have to lane cross at a corner once they enter.
