Appeal Information Sheet

Appeal item 1

Code Section

703.3

Requires

Reconsideration Text of appeal: 33713
This section requires that fire-resistance rating of building elements, components or assemblies shall be determined in accordance with the test procedures set forth in ASTM E119 or UL 263 or in accordance with Section 703.3.

Code Modification or Alternate Requested

Reconsideration Text
In this project, we are using a wide flange steel beam encased within 3-layers of 5/8" type 'x' gypsum in a 2-hour rated assembly. There is no such listed testing assembly and we are requesting a building code appeal to allow a steel beam encased in 3 layers of 5/8" type 'x' gypsum as a structural component in a 2-hour rated assembly.
"Reconsideration Text":
A Fire Protection Engineer report has been provided demonstration satisfaction of this approach.

Proposed Design

Reconsideration Text
We are proposing a wide flange steel beam as a structural component in a 2-hour rated assembly. The beam will be encased in a 3 layers of 5/8" type 'x' gypsum board (similar to GA FILE NO. CM2020).
"Reconsideration Text":
A Fire Protection Engineer report has been provided demonstration satisfaction of this approach.

Reason for alternative

Reconsideration Text
The reason for the alternate is to achieve a 2-hour rated assembly using a steel beam and gypsum instead of a wood beams and gypsum. Because there is no listed assembly for this type of detail we are requesting this design through the building code appeal process.
"Reconsideration Text":
A Fire Protection Engineer report has been provided demonstration satisfaction of this approach.

Appeal Decision

Alternate method for determining 2-hour fire resistance rating of steel beam protection: Granted provided the detail is revised to show continuous encasement of the beam rather than allowing the ceiling membrane to break the encasement.

"The Administrative Appeal Board finds with the conditions noted, that the information submitted by the appellant demonstrates that the approved modifications or alternate methods are consistent with the intent of the code; do not lessen the health, safety, accessibility, life, fire safety or structural requirements; and that special conditions unique to this project make strict application of those code sections impractical.
