Appeal Information Sheet
Appeal item 1
| Code Section | IBC 705.5 Fire Resistance Ratings |
|---|---|
| Requires | This code requires exterior walls of buildings with occupancy rating U with a fire separation distance of less than 10 feet to be rated for 1 hour fire resistance from both the interior side and exterior side of the building. |
| Code Modification or Alternate Requested | To forgo the 1 hour fire resistance rating on the exterior side of the south and west walls of the garage. |
| Proposed Design | As an alternative we are proposing to double the fire rating on the interior side to 2 hours using 2 layers of 5/8" fire rated drywall and forgo the rating on the exterior side considering there are no adjacent buildings to the south or west sides within 10'. |
| Reason for alternative | Should a fire originate in the garage the alternative method will double the length of exposure to further protecting adjacent properties. The proposed alternative is a significant improvement over the original walls that were not covered with drywall. Considering there are not adjacent buildings on the south and west sides of the structure there is reduced risk of fire from those sides. Lastly the exterior walls are covered with siding, 15/32" plywood sheathing and insulated with batt insulation. |
