Code Section

PFC B105.2

Requires

The minimum fire flow and flow duration for one- and two-family dwellings having a fire-flow area that does not exceed 3,600 square feet shall be 1,000 gpm at 20 psi for 1 hour. For one and two-family dwellings exceeding 3,600 square feet, the required fire flow shall be as specified in PFC Appendix B, Table B105.1(1). Note that the minimum fire flow for development in the Wildland Fire Hazard Designation area is 1750 gpm at 20 psi. A reduction of ½ of the required fire flow is allowed when residential fire sprinklers are installed that meet the Fire Code requirement.

Code Modification or Alternate Requested

With sprinklers the required fire flow in the Wildland Fire Hazard Designation is 1/2 of 1750gpm at 20 psi for a total required fire flow of 875 gpm. The nearest fire hydrant (#495340) was confirmed to have 600 gpm flow. In consideration of the proposed design elements below we would like to request that the available 600gpm flow be considered acceptable.

Proposed Design

Sprinklers will be installed in the house throughout. The house will be built with fire resistant roofing material (asphalt shingles) and siding (composite siding - Hardie board or similar). The driveway will be modified to qualify as a Fire apparatus Access Road with required turning radius (inner & outer) from SW Palatine into the driveway, driveway width (12ft for a single family home), load capacity (not less than 12,500 pounds point load (wheel load or gross wheel position weight) and 75,000 pounds live load (gross vehicle weight)), and an unobstructed width of 20ft. This will allow Fire Apparatus access directly to the house.

Reason for alternative

The design elements proposed in the proposed design will both lower the fire exposure of the house and provide Fire Apparatus more easy access to the house if a fire does occur.
