Portland and Gresham Firefighters were were kept very busy this afternoon as they were called to fight several area fires. The following fires are examples of the most serious:

At 12:41 PM PF&R and GFD responded to a house fire in the 700 block of SE 170th Dr. Arriving crews found heavy fire throughout the home but were able to extinguish it within 30 minutes. Crews searched for trapped occupants and located two unconscious dogs. No humans were injured in this fire, but despite the efforts of fire crews the dogs couldn't be revived.

At 2:47 PM crews responded to a grass fire threatening a structure in the 7600 block of SE Carlton, the fire damaged the structure's exterior before firefighters arrived to extinguish it. No injuries were associated with this fire.

At 5:02 PM firefighters responded to a fast moving grass fire in the 2700 block of 148th. This fire was heading towards several homes and an apartment building. Fire commanders called for a second alarm bringing additional resources to bear and firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire. With fast actions crews were able to keep it from damaging the nearby structures. No injuries were associated with this fire.

At 6:56 PM fire personnel were called to the 13000 block of SE Powell for a grease fire in an apartment's kitchen. The fire was extinguished with no injuries and damage was limited to the kitchen area.

These fires had varying causes and did differing levels of damage, but today is a reminder that while our kids might be back in school the summer fire season isn't over. Your local firefighters ask that you continue to use care with anything that could cause a fire.
