This morning just after midnight fire crews were dispatched to a home on SW Sherman St. between SW 6th Ave. and SW Broadway Dr. When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire in the basement and on the first floor of a duplex. The duplex was being remodelled and was unoccupied. This fire was complicated by the fact that the home's power line was damaged and the live wire was partially blocking access to the burning house.
The vacant duplex is surrounded by occupied homes so the initial priority for firefighters was evacuating next door residents and keeping the fire from spreading to those homes. Due to the complexity of this fire a 2nd alarm was called to bring additional resources to the scene. Buses were called to temporarily shelter displaced residents while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. With the arrival of help, fire crews brought the blaze under control.
There were no injuries associated with this fire and since the damage to neighboring structures was mainly confined to the exterior, residents were able to reoccupy their homes. Fire Investigators have returned to the scene this morning and continue working to determine the cause of this fire. Anyone who has photo, video and/or witnessed the initial stages of this fire is asked to call (503) 823-INFO.
