Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a SE residential fire at 11pm last night, with initial information that a resident was trapped inside the home. Battalion Chief C4 and Engine 9, stationed at 39th and Hawthorne, arrived to heavy fire from the exterior at 1415 SE 49th Ave, shortly recognizing that the fire had extended into the neighboring home.
Due to the credible information that an occupant was inside, crews deployed a quick knock down of the fire and transitioned immediately into rescue mode. The incident was further complicated by additional reports that there were three occupants in the neighboring home.
One victim was found by fire crews with life threatening injuries and severe burns and admitted to a local hospital. Due to the smoke inhalation, the victim was quickly given a Cyanokit, administered by AMR Paramedics who were immediately dispatched to the fire. A Cyanokit is used in an emergency to treat cyanamide poisoning when exposed to smoke from a fire. Five total residents escaped on their own accord and Red Cross is assisting with relocation of residents.
Due to two homes on fire at the same time, crews worked diligently to address the large amount of fire, yet recognized they needed to locate the occupant as soon as possible. AMR Paramedics were on scene from the beginning of the fire and were monitoring the radio traffic. When crews exited the home with the victim, AMR immediately administered patient care, allowing the truck crews to go back in and finish their search of the residential homes.
Portland Fire & Rescue would like to express the importance of working smoke detectors and advance planning on how to escape from your home in the event of a fire. Smoke detectors should be installed in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and every level of the home. Identify and practice a minimum of two escape routes in the event of a fire.
Stay home. Save Lives.
