Portland City Council approves accepting SAFER Grant

Yesterday, Portland City Council accepted a $2.1 million grant to increase staffing measures for the Emergency Operations Division of Portland Fire & Rescue. The grant offered through the Federal Emergency Management Association will be used to reopen Portland Fire Station 23 as a 4-person engine to better serve the residents of Hosford-Abernathy, Ladds Addition, and Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Station 23 personnel were moved to Station 21 in 2010 to enhance PF&R’s Willamette River emergency response capabilities. Since that time the number of emergencies in the old Station 23 response area has grown 35%. In 2017, a 2-person rescue was placed at the Station as a first step to restoring a 4-person crew and fire engine to the area.

On September 27, Portland Fire & Rescue received formal confirmation that FEMA had approved its application for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. This funding guarantees a budget to operate a 4-person crew at Station 23 for three years, dramatically increasing PF&Rs response capabilities for the homes, residents, and buildings in the inner SE Portland area.

Portland Fire & Rescue would like to thank city council for accepting the grant, in a 5-0 vote, to increase the safety of those within the service area of Station 23.
