Portland Fire Responds to two fires on the east side during the 5 AM hour.
Portland Fire was dispatched to a commercial fire in the Parkrose Neighborhood at just after 5 AM. As this fire was closing, a residential fire was dispatched out at 5:50 AM in the Powelhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood. Both fires were extinguished with no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters and both fires are under investigation.
The commercial fire in the 11100 block of NE Sandy was a converted commercial bus used as a storage unit was completely engulfed in flames upon arrival of the crews. The addressed building is a 30’x30 repair shop with lots of large items and cars stored in the yard behind the shop. The nose of the bus was parked inches away from the structure, causing concerns for the crews on scene. Water was being placed on the bus from the exterior while crews gained access to the structure to investigate if any fire had extended to the inside of the addressed building. With dark smoke and little heat on the interior, crews went to the roof to find a small amount of extension of the fire to the roof decking material and a hose line was put taken aloft to extinguish the flames.
With the fire extinguished and minimal damage to the structure, crews began to overhaul the bus and reload all the hose on the ground from the firefighting activities. As some crews were clearing the commercial fire, the residential fire was dispatched in SE PDX where a few diverted from the path to their home station to the fire.
The residential fire located in the 12500 block of SE Bush was extinguished within minutes of the first crews arriving. The fire was in the front of the home in an unoccupied room. Access was challenging with the heavy interior clutter present. Location of the fire and extinguishment happened in less than 10 minutes from the dispatch alarm. There was some residual smoke trapped in the home that needed a few ceiling vents opened and a fan placed at the front door to eventually clear.
Both fires are under investigation. No reported injuries to either civilian or responding firefighters.
