With the help of the public and other agency partners, PF&R Arson Investigators identified the serial arson suspect from a string of fires on the morning of 9/20/23. The suspect’s identify became known and was confirmed on Friday afternoon. This information was released internally to local law enforcement agencies within the region. PPB officers responded to a deceased male on 9/24/23 who was identified as Fredy Javier Pareves-Kancab (08-19-1988). PPB officers recognizing the name, contacted the Arson Investigations Unit with this information.

This suspect had a recent history of arson in the region. There were 14 confirmed fires started by the suspect last week in Portland. Additionally, the suspect was arrested in Gresham on September 18 for a three-fire arson spree. Portland Fire & Rescue would like to thank all those who aided in this investigation.
