Firefighters were dispatched to a residential fire (1934 NE Clackamas St) at 8:33 AM. Initial reports indicated a fire in the basement and that it was quickly spreading. The first in engine company arrived to smoke coming from both the rear and the side of the home. Fire crews quickly accessed the basement to extinguish the fire, while simultaneously looking for the occupant's pets ... 4 cats, 2 dogs, and a lizard. Two of the cats were pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants were alerted of the fire by their smoke alarms. They quickly called 911 thereby limiting the amount of damage to their home. Remember, working smoke alarms save lives.

The Red Cross has been called out to assist the residents with housing arrangements. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and a damage assessment is forthcoming.
